An apex resection (apex = point) or root tip surgery is a surgical procedure in which the tip of the root and a little of the surrounding tissue is removed and the root canal is hermetically sealed from the tip of the root (retrograde). This requires root canal treatment at least once before. Sometimes (less and less) the root canal treatment is done simultaneously with the apex resection.
The reason for apex resection is usually the presence of a source of infection around the root tip
