parodontitis 2.jpeg

Periodontics

An implant is an artificial root and is placed in the jawbone. If there is not enough jaw bone, artificial bone should be added. The procedure of sinuslifting is technically a difficult procedure and often unavoidable. It has been successfully performed under local anesthesia in our practice since 2004.

is an inflammation of the gums and / or jaw bone. This inflammation occurs when bacteria accumulate on teeth and plaque forms along it

the gumline. In time it can lead to the loss of teeth.

There are two main reasons for treating periodontal disease:

  1. Gum infections lead to loss of support tissue around the roots of the teeth, causing teeth to become loose and lost.

  2. In addition, untreated, unhealthy or inflamed gums are a continuous source of bacteria and their waste products that enter the bloodstream and can cause infections elsewhere in the body.

Periodontitis

An inflammation in the border of the gum ( gingivitis ) is caused by bacteria . Those bacteria attach to the teeth and form the dental plaque . Dental plaque is a soft and sticky, barely visible layer on the teeth. Plaque can calcify into calculus that is firmly attached to the teeth.

Gingivitis can spread in depth to the jaw bone around the teeth. The gums detach from the tooth surface. Plaque builds up again in the space (the pocket) that is created between the gums and the teeth. Due to this plaque, the inflammation moves even deeper. The fibers are broken by the inflammation and the jaw bone is destroyed. This makes the pockets deeper. In the recessed pockets, the plaque partially calcifies into calculus. This progressive inflammation with breakdown of fibers and jaw bone is called periodontitis.

Periodontitis can remain unnoticed for a long time, because it is often not painful - or only at a very late stage. Some of the characteristics that can occur are: red, flabby and swollen gums, bleeding gums when brushing or eating and retracting gums. A bad taste or bad breath can also indicate periodontal disease. Periodontal disease rarely causes pain complaints.

Only at an advanced stage of periodontal disease do complaints really arise. These can, for example, consist of teeth mobility or the creation of gaps.

Bleeding gums means there is gum disease (gingivitis). Do not ignore this signal, but take action to get the gums healthy again.

Timely treatment can prevent the loss of teeth.

By good oral hygiene you can contribute to the healing of periodontitis yourself. In addition, the Periodontist will remove the plaque and calculus in the deepened pockets by professional dental cleaning.

You should remove the plaque above the gumline yourself every day with good oral hygiene. With a toothbrush you can brush away the plaque on the surface. With tools such as brushes and toothpicks you can remove the plaque between teeth.

Due to the combination of good oral hygiene and dental cleaning, the inflammation usually disappears and the healthy gums reattach to the teeth.

Correct maintenance and follow-up by the Periodontist are important to keep your mouth healthy.

Halitosis

Halitosis means bad breath. With halitosis, someone finds the odor of his or her breath unpleasant or even repulsive. But especially people around can notice the halitosis. If people are asked about the cause of halitosis, most will answer that a stomach problem is the cause.

However, it is a fact: in most patients with halitosis, the main cause is in the mouth. People in the vicinity of a person with halitosis often have major problems with the bad odor, which leads to avoidance behavior.

Halitosis is a serious condition for the patient that can adversely affect life in many ways. Usually good treatment is possible.

If oral halitosis has been diagnosed, it may be due to the bacterial plaque found in gingivitis or the bacterial plaque on the back of the tongue.

Treatment almost always consists of teaching the patient how to properly remove all bacterial plaque from the teeth (oral hygiene). Periodontal treatment is also performed if necessary.

Plastic surgery

Periodontal surgery is not limited to the surgical treatment of the infected periodontium. Aesthetic surgery includes all surgical procedures aimed at correcting anatomical, developmental, and traumatic or pathological gum abnormalities.

Examples of periodontal plastic surgery are: gingival grafts, recession coverage, treatment of peri-implant soft tissues, crown extension, frenectomy, gingivectomy.

Different techniques are applied depending on the clinical situation.
